There are a number of magnificent natural sites not far from the Hôtel de la Cité and the town.

There are several long-distance footpaths around Carcassonne, including the GR36 "Rando Grand Carcassonne" and the GR78, also known as the "Chemin du Piémont-Pyrénéen vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle", which links the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and is none other than the route to Santiago de Compostela.
For those who prefer water-based activities, the Lac de Cavayère is a little gem just 5 minutes from the ramparts of the Cité, where you can swim, cool off and relax during the summer months. The descent of the Termes canyon is a more sporty version, combining the pleasure of water with thrills and spills, with natural slides, natural pools and abseiling all along the way.
The Alaric mountain is a popular destination for hikers. It offers remarkable views of the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees when the weather is clear. It may only be 600 metres high, but it's packed with breathtaking panoramas. As well as being home to the Corbières vineyards, you'll also find the Ribaute waterfalls, perfect for a summer swim and picnic.
